Each 1 ft (30 cm) square holds 1, 4, 9 or 16 plants, depending on the crop. Add crops and the planner fills the squares for you, and flags anything planted too close.

Square foot bed
1.2 × 1.2 m (4 × 4 ft), 16 squares
Sixteen squares, from one tomato to sixteen carrots.
Most are 4 × 4 ft (1.2 × 1.2 m), which gives 16 squares and can be reached from every side. A 4 × 8 ft bed gives 32.
Can I use 30 cm squares instead of 1 ft?
Yes. They work the same way, and the planner uses 30 cm squares when you choose metres.
What grows well in a square foot garden?
Compact crops you pick over several weeks: lettuce, chard, dwarf French beans, beetroot, carrots, radishes, spring onions, herbs and cordon tomatoes. Sprawling crops such as squash and maincrop potatoes take up too many squares.
VegLog keeps every bed you plan, tells you what to sow each week for your frost dates, and keeps a record of your harvests. Free for your first growing space.
